Our Farm versus Small Farm

Last week, we went on vacation. Thank goodness! The first questions, we Americans ask each other is, where are your from, promptly followed by what do you do. We’re proud and excited to share that we’re from Kansas and that we’re farmers.

After telling people we are farmers they are more than happy to share that they are too. They are working on making it a full time gig. What do you grow, I excitedly ask. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, etc. To which I’m more disappointed then when My Forever eats the last piece of cheesecake.

This is the first year that I have actually grown a tomato plant that we consumed a tomato off of. We don’t grow vegetables. We are a large scale operation that has 3 full time people kept busy. We grow hundreds of acres of corn and soybeans without counting the acres of pasture and hay ground.

It’s hard for me to relate to people that grow vegetables because I can’t do that to save my life. I can barely keep a peace lilly alive. Our farming includes tractors that have gps and auto steer so that we plant farm ground acres with precision and perfection. Then those crops are harvested with a combine that is worth more than a lot of people’s houses.

After telling people that we have a large scale operation and don’t grow vegetables, they get disappointed. They lose interest in talking about farming because we don’t do it like them.

I’m proud of the fact that our farm was passed down through the generations. I’m proud that our farm is supporting three generations. I’m proud that I get to work alongside my husband everyday. I’m proud that I have hundreds of cows that I get the opportunity to take care of daily. I’m proud that we’re doing our absolute best to improve the land in our care and leave it better than how we found it.

I’m super happy that you have your own piece of heaven on earth that you’re trying to improve. We, dear friends, are after the same thing. We’re trying to improve our environment, we’re trying to improve the land, we’re trying to improve our health, we’re trying to keep a community vibrant, we’re trying to pass it down to our kids so they don’t have to start at square one, we’re trying to do what we think is right.

Just because our farms look different, doesn’t mean one is right and one is wrong. I’m glad you grow vegetables that I can eat, otherwise I wouldn’t eat any if I was forced to grow my own because they would die. I’m glad that we can co-exist on this planet and have a place for both of us. I’m glad that we can grow beef for the world. I’m glad that we have choices that so many others don’t. It is not our farm versus small farms. It’s not a competition. It’s all of us together that will keep this world spinning. One is not a culprit. One is needed with the other.
